It’s hard to say what’s more concerning about this report from the National Audit Office:

  1. It’s from 2013, there isn’t anything newer.
  2. The 2013 report only quotes data up to 2011.
  3. Energy R&D doesn’t even feature on the list of sectors (fig 12 below)

Silver lining? between 1995-2011 businesses poured 34% more into R&D. Also higher education R&D is up £3.8B-£7.1B.

As you can see we’re massively skewed towards pharmaceuticals and biotech in the UK. Also spending as a percentage of GDP is falling.

If someone has more recent numbers I’d love to see them but navigation the NAO website isn’t my idea of fun.
